Day Off

Up early. After all, it's a Saturday. Why do I sleep in on workdays and wake up perky on my days off?

Tomorrow is Kelsey's birthday and Monday is Dylan's. Next Sunday is mine.

Across the street, workers are noisily dismantling their equipment after renovating a house. Next door, the guy with a motorcycle loudly exits the area.

A rainstrom seems likely.

The plum tree in my backyard is lush with leaves and blossoms.

I am watching old movies. My fantasy baseball team is 12th in a 12-team league.

The ups and downs of live continue, unmitigated. I guess I hope the rains come. And that my fantasy team has a good day. And that all of us do.

New Schedule

Ending up my first week as a part-time worker and it feels strange. I don't know what to do with all the free time...

Had a disappointing visit with a literary agent who told me there may not be a market for the memoir I wanted to write. As a consequence I made no progress this week on that.

Having much more trouble walking to and from work. Weak and scared of falling.

Happy 8th!

Today we celebrated Sophia's birthday ¡Feliz 8!
Hoy celebramos el cumpleaños de Sofía!

Social Media

I have over 1,000 Facebook friends; the same with Twitter, and some 1,500 connections on LinkedIn. It is true that I know most of the people on the first two but I am less discriminating with the third. Almost all of these connections are passive, i.e., they asked me to accept and I consented.

Social media have become the de-facto way we interact. I rarely post anything; when I do it is usually about my children or grandchildren or a story on KQED. Still, it is sobering to realize how many people I have gotten to know over the years.

I love people.

I used to tell my older kids stories about "Cyndi the Seagull." She lived around San Francisco Bay but always found her way to Sanibel Island, Florida for vacations, just like our family. My daughter Laila reminded me of this recently.

A more recent set of stories I told my older grandchildren when they were young was the "runaway" series. If a shoe went missing, it became the "runaway shoe."

Aidan's girlfriend Kelsey told me at lunch recently that her first impression of me was as a great story-teller.

Now I am partially retired, I need to return to story-telling. Thus, the memoir.
