Home!

It's so quiet here after three weeks with grandkids and a dog.

Aidan and Julia drove to El Cerrito this morning & brought me here.

The place looks great after a "deep clean."

Getting Ready

Loic negotiated a deal with Xfinity that will save me ~$1350/year for my Internet and cable TV service. It covers the next two years so I need to remember to call in June 2021 to extend the deal. There's zero chance I'll remember, of course.

Aidan and Julia are set to pick me early tomorrow morning to take me home.

I sat in the sun again today. And wrote some more in my memoir.

So Many Details

Loic is trying to help me reduce my Internet, cable and cell phone bills, which run to about $9000/year. The providers make it complicated -- we spent hours last night without success.

I have three medical visits today from the home health-care team.

Tomorrow is the day I hope to go home.

Getting my medication prescriptions renewed is tricky -- they were prescribed by a hospital doctor but need to be renewed by my PCP. I'm trying to navigate that terrain.

It's lovely weather here in the East Bay.

Routines

I'm starting to develop new routines, which is probably natural as we age. I get up around 8 and make breakfast -- coffee and a bread product, usually an English muffin with butter, or toast or a bagel. Maybe some fruit.

Then I settle into a writing regimen, working on my memoir. I'm not at all sure anyone will like this, let alone want to publish it. But I'm writing it anyway.

Later, it is time to sit out in the sun, which here is plentiful. If a New Yorker has come, I'll read that. If I realize that I need something for the house, I'll order it from Amazon.

Lunch is typically a cheese quesadilla with salsa.

In the afternoon, a nap, then more futzing with the memoir. I realize I have no idea about what level of detail to provide.

Half a century is a long time. It is challenging to recall.

Then, it's on to TV -- news, sports, movies.

Dinner can be anything -- iy depends whether I'm alone.

Bedtime arrives soon enough as I anticipate another day.

On I Go

Today I drafted sections on Salon and Wired for my memoir. Also 7x7 and my years teaching at UC, Stanford and SFSU. I've had such a complicated career!

My ETA to go home is now Saturday. Trying to perfect simple things like walking and sitting in the sun. Baby steps, I know, but that's where I'm at.

Daily Details

I still get tired when I do normal things: Walking, writing texts to people, going with the family on errands.

I don't get tired when working on my memoir, luckily.

The morning fog was burned off by the sun here in the East Bay hills. I drafted the parts of my memoir dealing with CIR and Circle of Poison today.

Post Fourth

The travelers are back after camping in the snow. We are having a late arrival of summer this year. So the kid got to see how in California, snow in the mountains translates into lakes and streams that deliver fresh water to our homes and farms.

Aidan is back from Tahoe as well, having seen a bear up close.

Weekend Life

Loic drove me to his hairdresser's and I got my first haircut in months. We watched some soccer and baseball. He's been painting and cleaning up the house for the family's trip to France at the end of this month.

In a bit I expect a visit from the fine young reporter Alex Emslie.
