No way to treat a donor...

I've never been a Paris Hilton fan. As far as I knew, she was just another run-of-the-mill celebrity, i.e., famous for being famous (as opposed to being famous for having ever done anything of value.)

That has now changed. Hilton was a donor to the McCain campaign, and (obviously) a supporter, until he launched his latest poison hit piece against Obama, comparing the brilliant young Senator from Illinois to a brainless celebrity -- as in Hilton, whose image he used in his ad.

Hilton, to her eternal credit, struck back, with this spoof ad. What I love most about it is her timely suggestions for an energy plan. While the candidates assume their positions, watching the polls and gauging how their words will play in swing states, this young woman just talks good, old-fashioned common sense. (The point of last night's post, BTW, was how cynical both candidates will prove to be in choosing their V-Ps.)

Now, of course, I know (and you can see) that she was simply reading teleprompter copy written by somebody far wiser than she is, at least about energy issues. But even an actor can't fake playing herself down to the letter so perfectly that she's turned what (in my view) up until now was a negative into a true contribution to the public good.

Paris, you go girl!

“Celebutard” is the moniker gaining popularity, and to those of us actually listening to “ the brilliant young Senator”, it is proving ever more suitable for Obama. The (very) thin veneer of his public persona is wearing ever more quickly - and irreversibly – now. You won't be able to see this, David. Just remember what I'm telling you; Obama is becoming less electable and this is not lost upon the Clinton camp. If Bill and Hillary can persuade enough of the powers that be in the DNC, we will witness what has been to this point the unthinkable – Obama under the (DNC) bus. Ugly? - You bet. But the ravenous appetite for power shared by the Clintons and the DNC leadership will risk a lot of ugly if given half a chance.

The subtleties are there. Have you noticed Hillary's mixed signals? – some of the insiders have. Did you see Bill unable to say, for the record, that he was confident Obama was “ready” to be president? Barring a catastrophic reversal in the McCain campaign, Obama's polling numbers are going to continue to soften. The 3 scheduled debates may well be Obama's swan song (I've been trying to tell you to listen to him when there's no teleprompter – he's a regular gaff machine).

If all of this seems mean spirited to you, believe me, that's not my intent. Axelrod painted a pretty picture which has had many swooning. But the colors are running now, under the growing intensity of political heat. If Obama was half the candidate Axelrod created him to be, he'd be smothering McCain by now. But he is not, and he has not.

Dorothy may be wearing her magic shoes, but the house has not fallen on Hillary yet.

David, I am so glad to see that you've been addressing the upcoming election more and more. I've really enjoyed each of your postings about McCain/Obama, particularly because I don't know who I'm voting for at this point. While I know it won't be McCain, I'm not sure beyond that (perhaps Paris?). I trust your opinions, and appreciate what you choose to share here. Please keep it up, interspersed with your other usual topics. Thanks, Tamara

Wishful thinking, Dan. Obama's appeal is not universal, obviously, but the polls consistently show him beating McCain. Polls at this point mean very little, so I track them but rarely cite them. McCain has lots going for him, too. But Obama is hardly an empty suit. That's simply a conservative fantasy. If McCain is desperate he always turns negative. That's the way with all losers. They attack. McCain's behavior is sickening. Plus this: he has flip-flopped 72 times already on issues. When I get time I'll blog the details. Obama has stayed steady as a rock. No flips, no flops, despite all the criticism. Both candidates are playing only one game now and that is for the middle. Campaign officials control everything each man does. It's not personal, it's politics. Doesn't matter what they say to get elected, it's what they will do. I want the US out of Iraq, as does every thinking person, asap. Obama will do that; McCain will stay 100 years. Case closed.

Salvo one comes Monday in The Atlantic. “Leaked” internal memos from the Clinton campaign. This is no accident; nothing with the Clintons is accidental.

The only snippets I've come across so far are pretty inflammatory – particularly from Obama's side. We'll see what happens next in “As the DNC turns”.
