A Political Error for the Ages

Let me get this straight. All this campaign season, Republicans have been bashing Barack Obama for his supposed "inexperience." His opponent for President, John McCain, is the oldest person ever nominated for the job, and has suffered from cancer and other ailments that raise legitimate fears about whether he could survive a term in the most stressful job in the land.

So far, so good.

Obama has chosen Joe Biden as his V-P, a man no one can accuse of inexperience -- either at home or overseas. He is widely respected as someone clearly qualified to be President, with many decades of public service at the national level, should the need arise.

And McCain has chosen...who? A woman from where? The mayor of a small town who somehow became governor of "the welfare state" less than two years ago?

My God, what was he thinking? That voters would be thrilled that for the first time in the GOP's history, a woman is finally on the ticket?

I don't think so.

For a while it looked like this election might be close. Both parties tried to bait the other to choose a V-P candidate that would, in actuality, make them more beatable. Obama, the smarter candidate, didn't take the bait. He picked a winner.

McCain has made a fatal political error. He fell for a well-laid trap and made one of the most foolish choices in the long history of American politics.

If his choice even shows up, this may be the most lopsided V-P debate any of us will ever witness. I can't wait. Joe Biden against...what's her name again? That person who probably doesn't even know what the mainland looks like, let alone the rest of the world.

Wow!

Yep. McCain's choice has electrified his conservative base, believe it or not. Most Americans do not know her yet, but she has an inspirational story to tell. She loves her country, always has. She comes from common roots; her father taught elementary school and her mother was a secretary at that school. She excelled at sports, earning the nickname “Barracuda” on her high school basketball team, was runner-up in the Miss Alaska contest years ago, has been a city mayor, and now governor for two years. She has degrees in political science and, ahem, journalism. In the earlier years of their marriage, she and her husband operated a private fishing business together. Her husband is now a member of the steel workers union and is working in the oil industry in Alaska. He is also an international snowmobile racer. They have 5 children, one of whom recently joined the army and will be deploying to Iraq next month. She is pro-life and is living her conviction. She is an opponent of government corruption and growth, having won the GOP primary in her state, against the incumbent, as a reformer. She has demonstrated her determination by squarely facing those adversaries in both parties. She ain't no “rhino” - she's the real McCoy. She's likely to be the first female occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. And, can you imagine, it's the Republican Party doing this. Hmmm.

If you watched her short speech yesterday, you saw no stuttering. She was comfortable, confident, and quite sincere.

Perhaps most upsetting for the DNC is the obvious draw on their disenchanted female voters, punctuated by praise from Hillary. And isn't it particularly ironic that the “party of change” selected one of the oldest members of the Washington establishment not yet retired?

This is a most unique year in American politics.
