Three Years Later

Since Katrina, the Gulf Coast has been spared any serious hurricanes, but that appears to be about to change. Gustav may be a vicious Category 4 storm by the time it makes landfall in the U.S. tomorrow night or Monday. Tracking this storm on Weather.com, I see it is projected to hit either Louisiana or Mississippi. Evacuations are underway.

Thinking back on the devastation I witnessed after Katrina, I'm just hoping that somehow Gustav takes pity on the people who have suffered so much already. It is unimaginable that Waveland, Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, Gulfport, and the other communities that took the brunt of Katrina's violence should be hit again.

New Orleans' levies are partly rebuilt. Will those again be breached? It's too early to bring climate change into this discussion, but the frequency of super storms is part of every reliable computer model scientists have devised.

For now, I am just hoping that those who have not yet recovered from Katrina will not be hit again...
