As you age...

...there are few pleasures better than revisiting a place with your (now) adult child that he treasured as a child, and that influenced him in ways both he and you are still discovering.

I had this experience today with my oldest son, now 28, as we visited the California Academy of Sciences(CAS) in Golden Gate Park.

He was a very little boy when we first visited the old Academy, and he allowed today that it truly was one of his favorite places throughout his youth.

The new Academy is an amazing institution -- the largest green public building on the planet.

But hidden within it are pieces of the old Academy that my son remembers.

Again and again, he noticed details -- some columns, a railing, an exhibit, that he remembers from his childhood and our many visits to the old building.

Everything changes. But institutions like CAS (and indeed all of us in the public space) need to always remember the effect we have on young people. My son is now in the process of finishing his PhD in neuroscience, and CAS has had more than something to do with that.
