Ukraine Resists

It’s nearly impossible to focus on the many other issues that normally concern me with the dramatic events in Ukraine taking up all of the oxygen in the global news cycle at the moment.

What is clear at this early stage of the war is that Putin’s expectation of a quick victory by seizing Kyiv and toppling the Ukrainian government has been frustrated by strong resistance by the Ukrainian population.

Putin may also have expected more support or at least obedience from his own population, but Russians have been making their displeasure with the invasion felt in various ways, including ongoing demonstrations.

Based on their initial success in slowing the invading forces, the Ukrainians are now benefitting by new injections of arms and supplies by Western allies, which may prolong the period before Russia succeeds in taking control of the country.

At this point, every day that Ukraine holds out and frustrates Putin’s advance has to be considered a major victory. In the process, the autocratic Russian leader looks less powerful in the eyes of the world, weakening his long-term prospects at holding onto power.

As I have repeatedly asserted, this appears to be the beginning of the end for Putin. It may be an extended period before he falls, but his pretense of invincibility has suffered irreparable damage thanks to the resistance of the Ukrainian people.

TODAY’s LYRICS:

“Photograph”

Song by Ringo Starr

Songwriters: R. Starkey / G. Harrison

Every time I see your face
It reminds me of the places we used to go
All I've got is a photograph
And I realize you're not coming back anymore

I thought I'd make it
The day you went away
But I can't make it
'Til you come home again to stay

I can't get used to living here
While my heart is broke, my tears, I cry for you

I want you here to have and hold
As the years go by and we grow old and gray

Now you're expecting me to live without you
But that's not something that I'm looking forward to

I can't get used to living here
While my heart is broke, my tears, I cry for you
I want you here to have and hold
As the years go by and we grow old and gray

Every time I see your face
It reminds me of the places we used to go
All I've got is a photograph
And I realize you're not coming back anymore

Every time I see your face
It reminds me of the places we used to go

But all I've got is a photograph
And I realize you're not coming back anymore
