“Allez Les Bleus!”
My French isn’t great but the chant ringing out at our house yesterday during the World Cup game sounded familiar indeed.
“Let’s Go Blue!”
My alma mater Michigan’s football team, like the French futbol team, is one of the four teams fighting for a prestigious title this winter.
Frankly, as the only member of our six-person household who does not hold a French passport or speak the language fluently, I’m often at a loss to follow the conversations around here. But when it comes to rooting for your favorite sports team, it turns out we speak the same language.

More very good news: A major winter storm blew into the Bay Area on Saturday along with the World Cup quarterfinals, dumping copious rain into an area that has been stuck in a multi-year drought.
More importantly, the storm brought snow to the Sierra, which is what is needed to end that drought. Specifically, we’ll need lots of storms like this over the months to come.
By then, the World Cup will long have been decided, one way or another.
And the college football championship will have been decided, one way or another.
Perhaps these will be the chants then:
“Vive la France!”
“Hail to the Victors!”
