Dr. Mark Richardson is in the hospital in Michigan, on a ventilator. He didn't wake up yesterday morning. Today he has opened his eyes and nodded at nurses.
He has been in poor health for several years. My sister Kathy has been at his side much of the time as has been my nephew Mike.

Hard Week for Journalists
The mass shooting at a Virginia newspaper shook up many people in the press this week. The attack illustrates something that is becoming prevalent in the Trump era -- an anti-press hysteria whipped up by the person at the top.
This attack does not seem related directly to that -- the shooter had a long history of animus toward the newspaper in question. But who really knows?
A tone has been set, by Trump, that makes all of us feel like we have a target on our backs. "Enemy of the people," he calls us. The day may soon come when we are in fact the last best hope the people have...

Little Things
Reflecting on the past week, which had some difficult moments, I'm instead inclined to feel hopeful. I woke up very early today and took care of various tasks around here that have been begging for my attention.
Laundry, dishwashing, etc. Little things.
It's the little things that fill our days, whether at work or home.
My older kids and their families are vacationing at Cayo Costa off the coast of southern Florida. I love that place. From the photos they are sending me they seem to be catching some pretty impressive fish!
Like everyone else, my heart is broken over the horrific breaking apart of families at our southern border. This is not the action of the country I love. This is the action of a vicious, heartless dictator.
Among the little things many of us do is follow the news. It is very hard these days to follow this news.
I'll watch other things on my TV this weekend. Casablanca, for one. I need to get some perspective.

Downturn
I'm basically being destroyed at work by bosses who don't fundamentally understand what I do or how I do it. I lead teams. We do great work. I delegate authority. We get it right. We win awards. I make the tough decisions.
They want to relegate me to a lesser role. At this point in my career that feels terrible. Like career death.

Crazy Man
Watching Trump's outbursts on CNN, I suspect this man has become seriously unhinged. His sanity has always been questionable, but lately he seems to have completely lost whatever semblance of normalcy he had.
It would seem we have entered an extremely dangerous period. Trump has disrupted our relationships with our closest allied while pursuing talks with dictators.
He's in way over his head, which means we are too.

Days Off
Taking my third straight day off from work, which I do not think I have ever done before in the past 52 years of working.
But the luxury of it feels good -- I suppose this is what retirement would feel like. Not having to endure the depredations of bosses who don't know anything about what they are doing and are only pursuing their own egocentric agendas. But I'll never know retirement.
Did I tell you that I now hate my job? I am old, frail and perfectly happy just watching TV and movies. But I have to get up every workday and go to the office just to earn a paycheck.
My teams won two Emmys last weekend. As usual, I was not there at the ceremony; I eschew such events.
I was verbally abused by my supposed supervisor last Tuesday at 4:40 p.m. He came into my office and screamed at me for a decision I had made earlier that day -- to take down a post about a young immigrant man who overcame difficult circumstances and challenges to graduate from college. His parents did not know the details of his life but when they found out, via our post, they went crazy. He begged us to take down the post.
I have been making these types of decisions for five years at KQED. There are dozens of such cases every year, each of them different. I try to use compassion when I make these decisions. As a result, on Tuesday, I was subjected to verbal abuse of the type I have never before experienced professionally, not even from Jann Wenner.
